Castor oil for curly hair

Castor oil for curly hair

It seems that everyone wants to know how to tame curly hair and make it gorgeous. I know how challenging it is to keep the curls bouncy and lightweight without adding frizz. It’s annoying, and I’m here to tell you that there are options.

Most people think that they have to buy expensive hair care products to get the best results, but I’m here to tell you that you don’t! While you might not have castor oil in the bathroom cabinet, it’s inexpensive and can work wonders for your curly hair.

I know you’re wondering what it does and why I use it for my curly hair. Let’s talk more about the benefits of castor oil for curly hair. That way, you’re going to rush out and buy some. However, don’t get ahead of yourself because I’m also here to help you use castor oil correctly.

Moisture

Your hair needs moisture to keep the hair hydrated and pliable. My curls are a tangled mess if I don’t have enough moisture inside. In fact, I used to experience brittle and dry hair that broke off all the time. However, when I started adding moisture to it through castor oil, the water molecules could bind with the strand’s protein and keep it protected.

Pulls Moisture from Your Environment

Castor oil’s considered a humectant. That means it actually attracts the water molecules from the air to help moisturize it and contain it.

Locks in Your Hair’s Natural Moisture

I’ve found that castor oil is the best product to help lock in moisture externally. It contains many polyunsaturated fatty acids. They don’t penetrate the hair follicles. Instead, they latch onto the outer strand and fiber to stop the moisture from getting out. Therefore, castor oil should be applied at the very end of the moisturizing process to ensure that the most moisture is locked in.

In the past, I found that castor oil made my hair dry. Ultimately, I realized that I was using it at the wrong time during my haircare routine. Don’t use it before you wash because it’s going to keep the water molecules from getting into the hair’s fibers.

Changes the Appearance of the Hair

Everyone wants to have beautiful, curly hair. I find that castor oil has completely changed my hair’s appearance. Let’s find out just what it can do!

Adds Shine and Luster

The oil is slightly shiny when you take it out of the bottle. That transfers to your hair to make it shinier and adds luster to it. When I walk around after applying the castor oil correctly, it seems to glisten, even if there’s no sunlight!

Softens Hair

Since the castor oil locks in moisture and has tons of fatty acids, it’s going to soften the hair as you use it more often. In fact, this is nourishment for the hair. I find that the softness also adds a silkiness to the hair itself and makes me feel like a goddess.

Reduces Frizz

The one complaint I find from most naturally curly people is that the frizz kills their look. I know how hard it is to battle frizz. If there’s even a touch of moisture or humidity in the air, my hair just poofs up into a huge mess. However, when I regularly use castor oil, it tames the frizz. Just be aware that it’s not going to work overnight. You’re going to see some improvements, but it takes a bit for the hair to get properly nourished and stay that way.

Prevents Graying

Castor oil can prevent your hair from turning gray, at least for a while. The hair retains more of its pigment. Also, the scalp has more blood circulation to keep the color coming in. I’m sure everyone can appreciate waiting to turn gray or having to use box dye to try and get the same hair color they once had. This is a great thing!

Reduces Baldness and Thinning of the Hair

While I have to say that there isn’t much scientific evidence that shows castor oil can reduce thinning and baldness, it is a possibility. A few studies show that the ricinoleic acid in castor oil inhibits a special enzyme that causes balding and thinning.

Promotes More Hair/Curl Growth

I’ve been applying castor oil regularly for many years, and I have found that it promotes more hair growth. Actually, I think it helps people retain the hair they already have by reducing breakage.

How to Use Castor Oil on Curly Hair

Everyone wants stronger and longer hair. I know my hair goals also include having beautifully curly hair that’s frizz-free.

If that’s your goal, too, it’s important to understand how to use the castor oil effectively. I use two different methods to reduces dandruff and give me beautiful curls.

Hair Mask

Curly-haired people often suffer from dandruff. I know it used to be really hard for me. With this special hair mask, you can nourish the hair and scalp so that it doesn’t get too dry.

Supplies Needed

  • 2 cups castor oil
  • 2 tablespoons aloe vera
  • Shower cap
  • 2 tablespoons tea tree oil
  • Spoon
  • Mixing bowl
  • Shampoo

Directions

  1. Add the tea tree oil and aloe vera to the bowl. Then, pour in the castor oil and stir it all together with a spoon for about a minute.
  2. Wash your hair using a sulfate-free shampoo.
  3. Apply the mask evenly to the hair. Make sure to start at the scalp and work toward the ends.
  4. Cover everything with a shower cap.
  5. Leave it on for 30 to 40 minutes. Then, shampoo and rinse as normal.

Strengthener Recipe

To get stronger curls, consider this mixture:

Supplies

  • 2 cups castor oil
  • 4 tablespoons almond oil
  • 2-3 drops of rosemary oil
  • Shower cap
  • Bowl and spoon

Directions

  1. Mix the castor oil and almond oil together.
  2. Put that bowl into a bigger one and fill it with hot water.
  3. Once the oil is warm, add the rosemary oil and mix it together.
  4. Section out your hair, and apply this mixture to the scalp. I like to work it through the curls.
  5. Cover it with a shower cap and go to sleep.
  6. Wash out the mixture in the morning with your favorite sulfate-free shampoo.

Conclusion

It’s possible to have beautiful, curly hair. I know it’s hard to manage your curls every day, but castor oil is my go-to and best friend. You can easily have curls that people get jealous over without the risk of damaging your hair.
