Ayurveda & Hair Oiling
According to Ayurveda, topical application of hair oil (Abyanga) improves nourishment to the scalp which helps to keep your hair long, lustrous, strong and healthy. The warm oil head and scalp massage nourishes the hair and scalp, alleviates dry scalp and enhances circulation.
VATA predominant hair and scalp is dry, curly, tangled and has split ends. The scalp may be dry, itchy and have dandruff. The Vata predominant hair requires more frequent warm sesame oil or sweet almond oil massage. Alternatively herbal sesame or coconut oil based preparations can be used. Brush the hair after massage and wrap in towels dipped in warm water.
Pitta predominant hair and scalp tends to be more of a combination (dry in summer/hot months and oily in cool temperatures), with split or clean ends. Premature greying and hair loss is seen predominantly in Pitta Types. The hair is thin and flat. The Pitta scalp tends to be red, itchy, and can be prone to eczema, or dermatitis.
Pitta hair requires gentle massaging with cooling oils like coconut oil.
Kapha predominant hair and scalp is lush, full, thick, wavy and slightly oily. The scalp is moist with strong, lustrous hair. The scalp may be prone to dandruff (which is a disorder arising out of vata and kapha).
Kapha hair require vigorous massage with warm oils like extra virgin olive oil and sweet almond oil that stimulate circulation in the scalp.
Carrier Oil Benefits
ALMOND OIL (SWEET): Sweet almonds are native to the Middle East and South Asia. They have long been used in healing, medicines and in cooking. There are two types of commercially grown almonds, sweet almonds and a bitter variety.
But it is the sweet variety that is most beneficial when it comes to hair health. The combination of polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fatty acids, along with vitamins E, D, A and particular B vitamins known to support healthy hair growth make it a perfect choice to use to grow and maintain healthy hair, naturally. It is great for regulating an oily scalp.
AVOCADO OIL: The monounsaturated fats in avocado oil is one of the main reasons it is so good for your hair, and super beneficial for dry hair & scalp.
Many people’s hair is dry, damaged and weak from poor nutrition, heat styling, chemical treatments and environmental pollution. Mono-unsaturated fats, when applied directly in a hair mask, can moisturize, nourish and strengthen hair strands, improving the way they look and protecting them from damage.
Massaging avocado oil into your scalp also stimulates blood flow to your hair follicles. With improved blood flow and circulation to the scalp, more nutrients can reach the follicles to stimulate new growth and healthier hair in general.
CASTOR OIL: Castor oil's anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, and antibacterial properties help it treat dandruff and scalp infections. It helps hair growth, brings back lost hair luster, and reduces frizz and split ends.
COCONUT OIL: Fatty acids like lauric acid and linolec acid, in addition to Vitamin E, are all present in coconut oil and are ingredients that help prevent hair’s protein loss so that it has more strength and less breakage occurs. Coconut oil penetrates the hair shaft, past the cuticle, to truly repair and restore damage from the source.
GRAPESEED OIL: Grapeseed oil is seen as a hair revitalizer in traditional Indian medicine. The cold-pressed oil is rich in oleic acid as well as linoleic acid, fatty acids that help nourish hair. Linoleic acid is an omega 6 fatty acid that helps stimulate hair growth. The high level of fats in grapeseed oil is good for moisturizing a dry scalp and your hair.
Grapeseed oil is often used in cosmetics due to its regenerative abilities, allowing skin to be well protected and moisturized. This same property will help your scalp retain moisture needed to prevent hair from drying out.
SESAME OIL: Sesame oil nourishes the scalp and increases circulation, boosting hair growth. Because it penetrates the hair shaft and nourishes it from inside, any growth will be strong and healthy too. You can use the oil as a hot oil treatment to further boost hair health. The fatty acids in the oil will nourish the hair and scalp promoting healthy hair growth.
SUNFLOWER OIL: Helps to control frizz, tackles dryness and damage and makes your hair more manageable. This oil maintains your hair’s luster and texture and can be used as a natural conditioner. An important source of gamma alpha linolenic acid (GLA), Sunflower oil helps in preventing thinning of hair and is effective in the treatment of hair-loss, baldness and alopecia areata, characterized by round patches of lost hair.
