PROTECTIVE STYLES (braids)
The purpose of a protective style is to, well, protect. Box braids (individual braids) have remained a great go-to when you want to give your hair a little break. Follow these steps to keep your style (and your edges) flawless:
Before you have braids installed, make sure your hair is properly cleaned and moisturized. Shampoo with our Egyptian Rose Black Soap Shampoo to remove any product buildup. Next, section your hair and apply our Shea Amla Whipped Hair Butter cream to add moisture. Just a little dab will do! Work it in completely.
Depending on your braider's preference, you may either air dry your hair or blow dry (if your appointment is in 30 minutes or your braider wants your hair straight). Once your style is complete, use a small amount of Shikakai Hair Growth Oil on the parts to help keep your style fresh and slightly relieve any tension.
Spritz your hair with a daily moisturizing blend of water, glycerin and oil of your choice. Apply the Shikakai Hair Growth oil to your scalp (on the parts) at least twice a week.
Dilute the Egyptian Rose Black Soap shampoo with water and spray the roots of your braids weekly. Rinse thoroughly. Gently squeeze water from braids and follow with your moisture spritz (above). Tie braids down with a silk scarf to prevent frizz.
The key to keeping this style looking fresh is to make sure your hair stays hydrated, and to reduce product buildup by washing weekly or bi-weekly.
We recommend using a professional hair braider or someone you trust with your hair (and edges). Braids that are installed too tight can lead to traction alopecia.
